Spring Round Up

Continuing the time-honoured BATANS Rite of Spring, Craig & Gayle Reiner are pleased to offer the 2023 Spring Round-Up Run, Saturday, May 20. Participants are invited to gather in the main parking lot of Sir Sanford Fleming Park (The Dingle) off Purcell’s Cove Road in Halifax, at 10:00 AM for a 10:30 departure.

REGISTRATION OPENS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 9:00AM
As the capacity limit for this event is set by the number of cars, we only need to know the prime registrant for the event, i.e. you will not register your guest in the normal registration screen. You will, however, subsequently answer a question "are you bringing a guest", and if yes you will enter their name. Just follow the process and things will work fine.

Leaving the Dingle, The Run will turn left on Purcell’s Cove Road and proceed about 11km into Herring Cove, taking a left along Village Road, along the very edge of the Cove’s western side, to meet the Herring Cove Road (highway 349) south of the village.

At that point, our route turns left on 349, past the Wilson’s gas bar (for those participants who forgot to fill up before venturing out…) and through picturesque Portuguese Cove & Ketch Harbour to the equally charming village of Sambro, about 27 km.

At the intersection of highways 349 & 348, the Run turns left again onto highway 348 into Sambro itself, for a rest stop at St. James’ United Church, where there is ample parking and an unfamiliar, panoramic view of the approaches to Halifax Harbour. Craig has arranged for refreshments while we chat with each other & the locals, and answer a photo op or two. The church has kindly agreed to open their building for bathroom use.

After about half an hour taking in the views, the Run turns left out of St. James’ and stays on 348 (Pennant Road) until the junction with highway 306, where the route turns north on 306 (The Old Sambro Road), through scenic Williamswood & the wilds of Harrietsfield, past another gas opportunity at Irving into the back of suburban Spryfield. Spryfield is ALWAYS “suburban” in the media…

At the stop sign, we will turn left to stay on the Old Sambro Road until Dentith Road, where our route turns right, then left onto Herring Cove Road as we bomb the Canadian Tire & Dairy Queen traffic enroute to Williams Lake. At Williams Lake Road, we turn right to Purcell’s Cove Road once again, then left to the Armdale Yacht Squadron, who are expecting a BATANS crew for lunch in their Spinnaker Restaurant at about 12:30 to complete the event.

Parking at the Squadron should offer classy backdrops for more photos.  The lunch menu will be part of registration, the cost is $24.00 plus tax and tips. Lunch choices, will be:
- Atlantic Haddock fish cakes with green tomato chow and house greens
- Chicken club wrap with fries or salad
- Mushroom stuffed ravioli with garlic toast

It’s not a long cruise, just shy of 55km, but it IS postcard scenic and amusingly twisty – perfect for that first official outing of the 2023 driving season. There’s room for 30 cars, assuming crews of two; why not join us?
